After Jack Hears Dina’s Voice Tell Him to Follow His Heart, He Reveals His Feelings for Phyllis to Nicholas

Soaps Spoilers has the Canadian Y&R day ahead recap for the Tuesday, September 21, 2021 episode, which airs in the USA Wednesday, September 22. In the previous episode, Ashland was blackmailed. This episode is a standalone episode for Jack Abbott, who thinks about his love for Phyllis.

At home, Traci invites Jack out to see Dominic but he claims he has a lot to do. He stares at Kyle and Summer’s wedding invitation. Traci’s seen this before. “You fall in love, something goes wrong, you swear off love and then you get a little bit lonely and start yearning for romance.” Jack says, “Yearning, eh?” He’s been this way since their mother died, his sister says. She knows he’ll find someone. Jack calls her an optimist. She leaves and Jack hears Dina’s voice say, “They grow up so fast, don’t they?” Jack calls out, “Hello, Mother.” He talks to the picture. She tells him she’ll have a birds’ eye view at the wedding. He should have known nothing could stop her. “Of course not. That’s my grandson getting married,” she says. He tells her they grow up fast. She counters that they must cherish them and follow his heart.

Jack walks out of the room and winds up in Chancellor mansion. Abby holds Dominic and tells her son that she wishes he’d grow up and have a heart as big as his uncle Jack’s. She asks if he thinks it’s miraculous. He believes it is. Traci tells her brother that “you can feel the love. It’s a miracle.” He says they, as parents, live their lives trying to keep up the promises they make to their kids. He promises never to let anyone break Dom’s heart. Traci says he can’t do that. Heartbreak is part of the human experience, which helps them overcome pain and move on. “Is that the lesson?” Jack asks. She knows he loves to be in love and thinks he’s elevated it to an art form. He claims it wasn’t his choice. He never found the right person. He hears a heartbeat and turns away. “Can you hear that?” Traci and Abby are gone and Phylis appears. She blows a kiss.

Jack winds up at the Abbott house again and he and Traci talk about their parents being happy. Maybe it was a lie or something changed in their lives. Jack guesses they’ll never know. Traci’s looking for answers. He tells her not to give up. The answers come when you least expect them. “Just like love.” He shrugs. Maybe it’s a facade. Traci asks if their love changed. Maybe John thought their love was strong enough. If the circumstances were different, maybe they could have made it work. Jack says they’d like to believe that. It’s why Jack has never been jaded or bitter in love. Nick turns up and calls what Jack’s doing dark and depraved. This is about Phyllis and Nick demands to know how Jack could do this. Jack is happy for him. Nick yells that he trusts Jack and respects him. Jack reminds him that he went after Phyllis when they were together, years ago. Jack wasn’t making a play for Phylis. He was trying to be honest about his feelings. Nick yells, “Why would you tell Phyllis how you feel about her when you know we’re together?” Phyllis appears and tells Nick that Jack isn’t the reason why they’re having issues. Jack gets between them. He doesn’t want to cause troubles and thinks he has no business taking his issues and dumping them in her lap. Phyllis calls it pure. “You were telling me your truth.” Sally shows up and tells Jack that she and him could have had a chance if he had moved on from Phyllis. Jack thinks Sally’s remembering this all wrong. She insisted on sabotaging his son’s relationship. “Remember Summer?” Nick says. Sally snarks that she’s sorry she got her a fabulous job. Jack tells Sally that she didn’t know who she wanted to be. She asks if she’s done anything as bad as Phyllis. “Did I run someone over with my car the way she did?” Both Nick say that she’s Phyllis. Sally says they could have had fun. Nick tells him fun and games don’t last forever. Sally says he has no date for the wedding. He should as Phyllis. Nick gripes that he shouldn’t think about it.

Jack finds Nikki boozing it up at the ranch. He takes the bottle away and she sets down her glass. He asks what’s going on and she says she and Victor have it all. “What do you have?” Jack says he has Harrison. Why is she attacking him? Nikki thinks he’s been jealous of her and Victor. He wants that love and devotion. That’s why he hurt Nicholas. “Phyllis broke his heart again, thanks to you!” She shouts. Jack gasps. Is that why she’s drinking? Has everyone gone mad? He only told her that she was in his heart. Why does what he feel matter? He cares about Nick and Phyllis and wouldn’t do anything to jeopardize their relationship. Nikki asks if he’s sure about that. She accuses him of wanting to replace Nicholas. Jack says it was late and had too much alcohol. The alcohol made him uninhibited. “You shouldn’t have done it, Jack,” she yells. Victor turns up and tells Jack to stop pretending he’s a saint. He’s fooled too many. “I know your real M.O.” He puts a sheen of respectability over the nasty things he does. Not like Victor, who is ruthless and doesn’t pretend to be anything but. He doesn’t whisper sweet nothings in someone’s ears while she’s with another.  He yells that he didn’t hurt anyone. Sally and Phyllis appear and he tells them that he has love in his life. “It’s more than enough for me.” A spotlight is on him and Phyllis appears and tells him he has to be honest. The love from family and friends isn’t enough. He doesn’t want to be alone anymore. “What you really want more than anything is to be with…” Jack wakes up. He grans a drink and reels over his dream. Jack texts someone to talk, stating that it’s important.

Jack gets coffee at Crimson Lights and flashes to telling Phyllis that she set the bar too high, that he has never stopped loving her. He greets Nick and tells him that he revealed he’s in love with Phyllis. Nick says he isn’t surprised. He thinks it’s natural that he’d go there. He’s not threatened and thinks that since he and Sally didn’t work out, he was gunshy about letting anyone into his life. Then there was Phyllis,” Nick says. Not that she’s safe. But she’s familiar. It’s understandable that he’d have feelings for her. “Because she’s Phyllis.” He knows what they had was special. Nick thinks it’s normal to remember things fondly. He does that with Sharon, reminiscing about them and their mistakes. It helps them change and grow. His relationship with Phyllis has changed. “You gotta evolve, right?” Jack agrees. Why did Nick confide in him the other day about his relationship with Phyllis? Nick doesn’t know and figures he was testing him. “Did I pass?” Jack asks. Nick smiles. “You failed, miserably.” Jack is clear. He’d never act on those feelings. Nick doesn’t deserve the same kindness. He brings up the past and Jack asks to leave it there. Nick’s sorry he hasn’t found a woman who loves him as much as he loves Phyllis. Jack says people keep telling him that. It’s a theme.

Nick arrives home and tells Phyllis about his meeting with Jack and his conversation with her, where he told her he never stopped loving her. Phyllis is glad he told him. It was a burden keeping it to herself. She didn’t say anything because it was personal to Jack. “Yeah. Okay,” Nick says. Phyllis says he’d been drinking. It doesn’t change anything with them. Nick admits he’s not sure. Phyllis yelps, “We’re solid!” She tells him to stop thinking and kisses him. She takes off her robe and seduces him.

Back at home, Jack calls Kyle to chat. They discuss Harrison and Jack tells him how much everyone is looking forward to the big weekend in Milan. He admits he’ll be alone. Kyle worries but Jack says there is nothing to worry about. He tears up and tells his son he loves him. Dina’s voice tells her son he’ll be okay and find love again. She loves him. “I love you too, Mother,” he says.
