(This day ahead recap episode airs in the USA on Jan 24. Expect spoilers! Recaps go live by 4:15 PM EST daily.)
Heather flashes back to spending the night with Daniel as she buttons her blouse at his place.
He asks what happens now.
She asks what he wants to happen and apologizes for putting him on the spot.
He knows he screwed up in the past.
She’s done with recriminations and wants to look to the future.
Sighing, Daniel sits and says Lily deserves better. Heather reminds him he’s not in love with her and there’s no formal commitment.
He points out they are a couple. He’s just having a hard time respecting himself right now.
She’s sorry if this affects Lily but this is about them.
They have history and a child and need to see if they have a chance.
The love and connection is still there. He’s himself again so they can be together again.
Does what he’s had with Lily compare to what they had or could have again?
She’s not going to push but she feels as close to him as she ever did before. He admits he never allowed himself to consider them being together again.
Heather can’t be around him and not want to be with him. He admires how strong, beautiful, and brilliant she is.
She offers to let him buy her a late lunch.
Abby stops by Chancellor-Winters to see Devon. She reminds him that she suggested he hire her to add another layer of defense against Tucker.
The more she thinks about it, the more she wants it to happen. He’s been thinking about this too.
He’s sure that she would bring lots of value to the company because her advice to him is always honest and on point.
She’d love to contribute more since the company is their son’s legacy. He wants her on the board.
There will be a bit of red tape but he’ll put together a solid plan.
His meeting is canceled so he asks her to lunch.
When Abby and Devon arrive at Society, they notice Daniel and Heather are there together.
They say that it looks like they all had the same idea.
After some chit-chat, Devon and Abby cross the room and get a table.
He stares across the room as she looks at her phone.
Devon tells Abby that he’s sure that it won’t take much effort to sell her joining the board to Jill and the others.
That sounds good to her because she’s excited to get back to the corporate world.
Her restaurant is a success but it’s already hit a ceiling. She doesn’t want to expand because it would lose its cachet.
The place has been good to her for a longtime but she doesn’t want to be pigeon-holed in hospitality.
She had a rush when she worked at Newman.
He recalls how stressed she was. She admits that but misses the day to day in the corporate world.
She knows there’s a lot of politics on the board and roadblocks for change. He advises her to taper her expectations.
He loves the idea of working with her. She thinks she’d be a great asset and could maximize her creative instincts.
She notices him staring at Daniel and Heather and asks what’s going on.

Jack brings Nikki to the Abbott house. She admits she had two drinks but called him before it got out of hand.
She asks if he will take her to a meeting. He thinks they need to call Victor but she tells him they can’t.
Nikki insists it was only a minor slip-up but Jack doesn’t think she should be keeping her husband in the dark. That’s how addicts stay addicts.
She explains that he is constantly hovering and it’s making her claustrophobic and ashamed.
Jack thinks that Victor’s idea of a change of scenery could be positive. She can’t up and go when her support is there.
She’s sure that Victor wouldn’t want him to be her sponsor but she can’t start with a new one.
Nikki begs him not to jeopardize this.
He’s touched she has so much faith in him but still worries about Victor.
When she explains how stressed she is, he agrees to play this her way.
They discuss her first drink today. He can see she’s been through a nightmare and is startled when she fills him in about Cole being back.
He’s even more surprised when she explains the family has a new member.
Jack is shocked after she’s filled him in on Jordan, Claire, and the vodka IV.
Nikki didn’t know what was going on.
Once she understood what was happening, she knew that Jordan knew exactly what she was doing.
This all sounds sadistic to Jack.
He can still recall all the grieving that Cole and Victoria did for their child.
This is a miracle and a tragedy on so many levels. He’s sure it will take months to develop some kind of relationship with Claire.
Nikki says the only way out of this is through and Jack agrees to be with her every step of the way.
She tells him she went to see Claire and was surprised by how much she opened up.
She’s so damaged. It’s like she was hypnotized her entire life.
All Claire ever knew was lies. Jordan is evil incarnate.
She admits there was a glimmer of hope with Claire and she might forgive her one day.
But she couldn’t bring herself to hug her when she broke down.
That made her ashamed and upset. Jack can understand her emotions being all over the place.
Standing, Nikki says the kidnapping all came back to her and that’s why she called him.
He tells her that’s a positive sign and he will be there for her day or night.
She makes him swear not to tell Victor anything and they hug.
Adam and Nick walk into Victor’s office as he is reassuring his daughter that he will accept Claire into the family if all goes to plan.
Adam wants to know what that acceptance means.
His sister tells him to butt out. He has no right to an opinion.
Her brother is concerned anyway and wants to protect the family from outside harm.
She thinks he should be more sympathetic to Claire given he’s an outsider too.
Nick tells him to move on but Adam isn’t sure about allowing a mentally ill felon in.
Victor tells them there’s no reason for this to be contentious and they have to do this a day at a time.
Adam can’t help thinking about where this could lead and whether Claire will bring Jordan back into their lives.
Victor says that won’t happen. Victoria stands up for her daughter and explains that Claire has already stood up to Jordan.
None of this is reassuring to Adam but Victor trusts his daughter’s instincts.
Adam is not convinced by any of this because he’s been in Claire’s shoes. He will prove himself with action and all Claire has given them is words.
He suggests that what they need is caution, not compassion.
Victor can understand his questions. Victoria tells Adam his feelings aren’t relevant.
She accuses him of being worried that they will love her daughter more than him. He’s not concerned about that since they don’t love him at all.
He’s just concerned about Jordan and thinks they would all be wise to worry.
Victoria is sure Jordan will die in prison.
Nikki drifts in and Victor tells his baby he’s been worried about her. Her daughter announces Claire is posing a threat to Adam’s ego.
Adam says he’s not threatened. He’s just concerned about them.
Nikki says they are handling this. Victoria knows what Jordan is capable of and thinks they should be compassionate to Claire.
Nick supports her. Victor tells Adam to do the same.
Adam walks off to work.
Nikki announces she went to see Claire and sees her in a new light now. Victoria is glad to hear that but Victor is concerned.
His wife explains that the conversation she had and how much Claire likes to hang out at the children’s ward.
Victoria is sure that the visit gave Claire hope.
Nikki thinks she’s trying to fill an empty place in her heart and they have to have faith she will get there.
In the psychiatric hospital, an orderly brings Claire the phone, saying its a call from her mother. It’s actually Jordan.
She can hear Claire breathing. Claire declares she’s dead to her now.
Jordan begs her to listen and understand that the Newmans will take her into her world and annihilate her.
Claire says the Newmans care about her and her future. She tells Jordan that she doesn’t deserve her and she wants her dead.
She hangs up as Jordan bellows, “Don’t leave me!”
Claire hands the phone to an orderly, telling her never to bring a call from that number again.
“It was the devil,” she says, before rolling up into a ball.
