Young and Restless’ Mark Grossman on Adam Torn Between Sharon & Chelsea

A complex character is torn between two lovers.

Adam Newman first appeared on the show in April 1995, born to Hope Wilson (Signy Coleman) and Victor Newman (Eric Braeden). Since, he’s been played by Chris Engen, Michael Muhney, and Justin Hartley before Mark Grossman took over the role in May 2019.

Grossman has mostly received positive reviews after taking over the role and discussed what he most enjoyed about bringing Adam Newman to life by Soap Opera Digest. “I love that Adam is such a complex character. Obviously, the father/son relationship with Victor is complicated and I love that. I’ve always been drawn to characters who have messy lives.” He went on to say, “It’s always exciting to see where the storyline is going and looking at it through Adam’s eyes. How I interpret that is an exciting part of being an actor.”

The actor revealed that he believes Adam is challenged most by Victoria. The siblings have a “More adversarial relationship now. They’re both gunning for Victor’s approval.”

Regarding Adam’s feelings for Sharon Newman Rosales (Sharon Case) and Chelsea “With Sharon, it’s the ‘first love’ thing for him. I think the reason why Adam and Chelsea Lawson Newman (Melissa Claire Egan) can relate to each other so well is that because they both have this dark, manipulative, con-artist side.”

Mark Grossman was in on a video interview with Sharon Case and Jordi Vilasuso (Rey Rosales) where they discussed Sharon’s feelings for her ex-flame that have never abated. “She’s not having a Bipolar moment. She’s always been that way when it comes to Adam. For years! Decades!” She went on to say that Sharon has always felt that way. “It’s hard to play a triangle.” Grossman agreed, “I do find playing triangles difficult.” He’d asked fellow coworkers how to pull it off without looking like a jerk. Watch for the part around the 14:00 mark where they discuss Grossman’s audition with Case and how she didn’t memorize her lines. “I’m sorry your whole life and job was on the line and I messed it up for you there!”
