Canadian Y&R day ahead recap for Tuesday, January 4, 2021 episode, which airs in the USA Wednesday, January 5. (Recaps live by 5:45 PM EST daily.) In the previous episode, Chelsea wanted to fire Sally. In this episode of CBS’ The Young and the Restless, Devon and Abby get into it about Dominic, Nick reveals to Sharon what he learned in Italy, and Chance is ready to get back to work.
Pretty in pink, Abby strolls down the stairs feeling happy since Dominic went to sleep fast. She admits to Chance she has her own questions and fears about parenthood. He doubts it and his own parenting.
She’s certain that they’ll bond soon. He needs to focus on their family and growing the connection. She has faith in him. He kisses her. They have to make a decision about Devon’s request to play a larger role in the baby’s life. Abby wonders if he’ll change his mind. Chance thinks he hit the pause button so he didn’t cause a scene in Crimson Lights, not because he changed his mind.
He doesn’t think he’ll change his mind. Abby says he’s been amazing with Dominic. Mariah went through something similar. Her time away brought relief. Maybe that will happen for Devon. She says if not, they’ll do what’s best for their son. He needs stability. Spending time at Devon’s, the older he gets, she feels would confuse him. “He needs to know that this is his home. We are his parents.”
They agree Devon can visit him anytime but they say, “Shared custody isn’t going to happen.” Chance knows he’ll be disappointed. She says it comes from a place of love.
Devon stares at Dominic’s footprint photo. He tells Amanda that they seem to be feeling like he attacked their parenting skills. “They got very defensive.” Amanda says they also know he’s been there from the beginning. He asks for her suggestion. She knows he’s giving Abby time to think but doesn’t seem sold on him putting a pin in the conversation.
If in his shoes, he asks what she’d do. She doesn’t think he’s being unreasonable. “Don’t let this go,” she suggests. He kicks himself for not adding to the agreement when she first asked. He was sure nothing would go wrong. “You did,” he says.
She hates seeing him hurt. Amanda knows he wants to see that boy get all the love he deserves. There is nothing wrong with that. She hugs him and then tries to distract him with food. They kiss and Abby arrives.

At the coffee house, Sharon and Rey banter and flirt. Nick turns up with Christmas bags. Rey wants to open them now but Nick jokes to keep his hand off the merchandise. They talk about Faith making him a birthday cake and Nick admits this trip was the best gift he could have given himself.
The change of scenery helped him “figure out some things.” He tells her that Harrison’s speaking Italian like a native. Sharon loves that. She asks Rey when they’re going to Milan. He has to table the conversation. He needs to go see Chance.
He leaves and Sharon prods for more information. Nick feels relaxed. He realized being a Newman shouldn’t define who he is. He has said this before but this time he feels it’s true. Sharon’s proud of him. He admits he wasn’t honest with her about his dream. Cassie was in it. Sharon asks how she looked. He calls her beautiful and content and fills his ex in. Sharon’s eyes shine as she believes it was somehow a message from their dead child. Nick believes he’s found what he’s looking for. His idea involves Noah and giving him stability.
Nearby, Rey and Chance talk about bringing him back on the force. Rey asks about Abby and the baby. Chance tells him she’s on board. “Enough about me,” he says. He wants to talk about the job so Rey fills him in on a new case. Chance and Rey stroll by Sharon’s table. Chance goes and Nick invites Rey to catch up with beer, soon. He goes, leaving Rey alone with Sharon. She updates him about Nick’s holiday epiphany.
Chelsea arrives at Society and takes a few deep breaths in. Noah finds her. “It’s been a day. Already,” she says. She’s considering asking Adam to turn an office into a breathing room. Noah gets it and asks if there’s something he should know about. She shrugs. “Office politics.” He understands, considering who she’s working for. Not to mention Sally’s in the mix. She and Adam seemed close at the wedding in Tuscany, he tells her, prompting her to do more deep breathing.
He realizes what he said and hopes he didn’t hit a nerve. Noah starts to wonder if signing on was the right thing to do, being a part of the family business. She asks why he returned. He shrugs.
Maybe he was trying to prove himself. Things in London didn’t work out the way he wanted. Later, Nick appears. He thinks Chelsea looks terrific. They catch up and she goes back to work. Nick is welcomed back by Noah. Nick has ideas for his son and asks him to keep an open mind. He asks if he’d like to work with him at New Hope.
Back at Devon’s, Amanda lets Abby in and goes to pick up dinner. He apologizes for how tense things got. Abby apologizes for her reaction and thanks him for time to think. She tells him she’s eternally grateful for all he has done.
He’d do anything for Dominic. She knows but she and Chance decided the won’t make changes to the visitation agreement. “Dominic has a home with his mother and his father.”
Devon lets her know he isn’t trying to take Chance’s job as father from him. She knows. He’s welcome in their home but she explains she doesn’t want to confuse her son, especially since Chance is trying to make up for time lost with him.
Devon doesn’t want to get in the way of that. Abby reminds him they created boundaries. It’s important to adhere to them. He hears her but they had no idea what things would be like. They discuss how Chance wasn’t around when he was born. “I guess we don’t always get what we want,” she says.
She’s thankful he was there to care for the baby when they thought they lost Chance but he’s home now. He needs time to bond with him. “I refuse to let a single thing distract from that.” She hopes he gets it. She knows it’s not what he wanted to hear. Since Mariah needed space, she tells him they’d understand if he needs it too. He’s not going anywhere.
She’s glad. He’ll always have an important role in his life. He nods. She invites him to stop by later to see him. “Nah, I’m okay,” he says. It’s awkward and she takes off. Once outside, she looks upward and sighs, while inside, Devon slumps on the sofa. Amanda returns and Devon lets her know that Abby turned him down. Amanda thinks it’s a stretch.
She brings up Abby running away to a foreign country and not telling anyone where she went. She apologizes. She thinks he has a right to be angry and disappointed. “You can take legal action,” she says. He doesn’t want to take Abby to court. Amanda calls him the de facto parent and reminds him again of Abby dumping the kid on him when she took off. He can’t argue that he put his life on hold for the boy.
She knows what they can use to build an argument. He can petition the court for visitation. Chance wasn’t there when he signed the original contract. It complicates things. The legal agreement is solely with Abby. Devon hears her but isn’t sure where Abby’s coming from. He knows taking them to court would affect everyone. She’s concerned that they’re “drawing a line in the sand.”
Abby returns home with adorable Dominic and takes pictures of him. She tries to get him to smile but he won’t. She talks about his dad and how he’ll be there if he has a problem. She calls Chance but he doesn’t answer. Where did he go? Chance turns up and talks to the baby as he drinks milk. He talks about what fun he had on a new case.
“Wait, you went back in the force and didn’t tell me?” He denies that. He’s just catching up with Rey. She’s relieved. He’d never go back without talking to her but it was nice to get his feet wet.
Rey sees Chelsea at Crimson Lights at work on a design. He asks how it’s going and how her new job is. Chelsea talk about how her new job has a downside to it. She can’t believe he’s asking her anything. It’s a miracle he’s talking to her at all after she poisoned him. She calls him a good guy.
He asks what’s bothering her. She appreciates his question but says she is feeling sorry for herself. She won’t bore him with his issues. Sharon watches and smiles. When Rey goes to see her, she tells him Chelsea’s right. He is a good guy.
