Young and the Restless Opinion on the Predictable, the Lack of Intrigue and Wanting to Make Jordan Pay

Like any viewer, I demand more when watching our soaps. I’m not getting everything that I want from Y&R this week, though we had a few interesting moments. I’m a bit ranty, and trying to balance the rant with some positive vibes! As usual, nobody’s safe from mocking.

Chelsea blew it

After the many weeks of sitting in that chair acting as though she wasn’t progressing toward getting better, Chelsea started to become cocky. She was one episode away from having it all. But she was wandering around, moving and stretching when she literally never knows when Adam’s going to appear. Because of this, he’s now on to her and she has no idea. It makes me almost giddy with excitement since I’ve been MIA for six months and now that I’m watching again I’d been rooting for her (for once) and now I’m all team Adam. Yep. I’m as fickle as they come. I’m team drama all the way. But we know Chelsea and she likely won’t do time for this, will she?

Surrogacy story

The day Mariah was injected with the eggs, the women all sat around and sang Kumbaya with Tessa on guitar. Devon gave Mariah a penny that brought him good luck and the women all sighed and smiled and held hands, singing, “Fah who forzes! Dah who doraze! Welcome…” Boring. Nobody wants to see this. They were all so kind and sweet. Come on! This is a soap opera! Where’s the drama? Where was that one person who hates one of those “bitches” who is jealous and wants to put a stop to this? The one that we’re all supposed to commiserate over hating. This is still a soap opera, right? My guess is they’re waiting for the drama to unfold during the pregnancy, but this is a missed opportunity.

Highlight: I loved how Tessa said she brought over the Liz Phair poster to help abuse her into writing good songs. Funny! I wish we’d see her more often.

Faith turning to alcohol

Oh boy, here we go. Predictable. Straight out of 1984. Instead of having a story about weed or something current plaguing teenagers, Y&R chooses to go with something safe. Their tried and true alcoholic storylines. Lame.  At least the bullying storyline is over. I couldn’t stop laughing that they used the name Tommy Ross in the story. For those who didn’t watch the thriller Carrie a million times over the years, Tommy Ross is the name of the guy who asked Carrie to the prom, unbeknown to him that the mean girls were planning on humiliating Carrie at the prom by making her prom queen and throwing a bucket of pig’s blood on her. Sadly, poor Faith doesn’t have telekinesis and isn’t going to be able to get back at stupid Jordan. Instead, she’ll drown her sorrows in tequila (good choice) and this will put Nikki and Sharon at war more than usual.

The real story that I’m appalled by is Nikki’s horrifying belief that somehow a fourteen-year-old kid texting a person she doesn’t even know and meeting them at a coffee shop, even with her grandmother present is somehow “romantic.” Um. Okurrr. Supportive, yes, but in the words the rest of us viewers have been using the last two weeks? creepy, frightening, horrifying, stupid…

I believe some of those words were used to describe our adorable Faith for texting with a stranger. Didn’t her mama and dad ever teach her not to talk to strangers? Check out Ms Chelsea Blue’s tweet. Honestly…whether or not you love or are annoyed by the kid, she’s dumb as a stump.

Highlights: Alyvia Alyn Lind is a truly talented actress. Those horrid bullying scenes made me like Faith. I felt her pain over that arsehole Jordan’s bullying. Now, who wants to go with me to get a bucket of pig’s blood to dump on Jordan’s head?!

Sally’s her own worst enemy

All Sally has done for the last few weeks is try to figure out what Kyle’s secret is while whining at him for hating that she and Jackie Boy are into each other. She doesn’t need anyone’s blessing to date Jack. It’s weird how she constantly seeks out Kyle who is minding his own business and gets in his face, which only causes her insecurities to flare up.

It was sweet that Sally bought Jack that cool dinner jacket but the shirt in such quick succession was cringy. If a man bought these items for a woman we’d be giving each other ‘the look’, assuming he wanted sex in return. Not good. I’ve been on the fence about how I feel about her even knowing what she did in Los Angeles, but at this point, I’m leaning toward her using Jack.

Not remotely on the edge of my seat

When Rey was in the hospital, the show wanted us desperately to believe he was in dire straits with Sharon standing ten feet away, urging him to fight for his life. I felt no love for Rey coming from her. In fact, I didn’t feel anything at all. He didn’t even code while she was rallying for him for what appeared to be no particular reason.

Finally, Wednesday’s show had Sharon sobbing over Rey’s sickness and she sat a foot away from him.  I don’t know why the sudden change, but I was grateful. Still, there’s still zero chemistry between these two, and couples need chemistry.

Warped speed story-telling

I’ve always thought that Y&R was slow in the pacing with their storylines. And I thought Days of our Lives was the fastest-paced soap but it turns out, they’ve got nothing on Y&R this past year and especially this week. Rey being sick with what appeared like mild flu until he started talking about burning feet lasted a few days. The crisis itself, if we can even call it that, lasted all of twenty minutes before Elena and Nate figured out at warped speed that Rey had thallium poisoning, had the antidote arrive from Chicago, injected Rey and had him all better and doing detective work on his own case from his hospital bed after hearing that the health inspector was at their house moments before. All in the space of one episode, which begs the question, where’s the suspense in that?

Cases of thallium poisoning are so rare, that the drug to cure it is also rare. The doctors should have had to call in a consultant and should have taken longer than 20 minutes to figure it out. Rey should have been at death’s door before they finally gave him the injection and then, it should have taken days for him to feel better so people could rally around him and we could cry over what might happen.

Conflict of interest

Things raced toward Friday’s episode when Rey begged Michael to get a judge to issue a search warrant for Adam’s house when Adam isn’t even a suspect and there is legit no reason whatsoever for him to have given the warrant. And worse, Rey went over to Adam’s house and did the search. The. Victim. GCPD is actually, and I can’t believe I’m going to say this, worse than PCPD and Salem PD put together. This week, anyway. Anyone else think that Rey and Chelsea teamed up to ruin Adam? I checked with my Magic 8 Ball and it told me, “All signs point to yes!”

Highlights: The highlights are a bore, trust me I know, but that’s what we’re dealing with! Elena’s blouse was so cute and looked lovely on her. I want one in black and another in blue. And I dig her friendship with Lola, though as usual, I am constantly wondering why Lola has such a small role since she at one time was paired up (no chemistry) with Kyle and was in almost every scene ad nauseam. This will only get worse, I assume since she’s the new Supergirl and will need time off to film the movie. That could lead to bigger roles and then no more Lola. Hmm.
