In the Wednesday, August 18, 2021, full episode recap of Days of our Lives, everyone hears from Sami, Johnny DiMera returned to Salem, and Marlena and John learned that Sami was missing. Abe stops by Eli’s and tells him about how Theo’s doing after being dumped at the altar. He learns Lani’s at Paulina’s and explains what she’s up to. They agree that Lani’s stubborn. “Wonder where she gets that from?” Eli asks. Abe chuckles. He’s glad Lani’s forgiving Paulina. Eli thinks Abe’s close to forgiving her. Abe admits he’s seen her kindness and generosity of spirit.
At Paulina’s, Olivia tells Lani that she can count on her Aunt Paulina to be straight with her. Paulina says there’s something she needs to tell her. She’s about to tell the truth about her being Lani’s biological mother when Olivia asks Lani to refresh her ice tea. “I thought you said it was too sweet?” Paulina comments that she thought it was too sweet. “I said no such thing,” Olivia says and gets Lani to find her something to eat. Once she’s gone, Olivia tells her daughter she’s “Madder than a hornet in a Coke can.” Paulina gripes at her mama but Olivia’s not letting her tell Lani anything. She’d be losing the only mother she’s ever known. Paulina looks sheepish and Lani returns with tea. Paulina promises not to lie anymore. They make up. Big Mama approves. Lani goes and Olivia tells her kid that if she told Lani the truth, she’d lose her father, not just Tamara as a mother. Abraham would be hurt to know he’s not her father.

Marlena returns home to a hug from John. He tells her the news that Allie and Claire were released from jail and Ciara’s regained her memory and reunited with Ben. They’re both so happy until John explains that Sami’s marriage is over. John admits that Sami and Lucas had an affair. “No, no…” Marlena says. John tells her EJ was furious. Belle told him. She learned during a business meeting with EJ. He couldn’t stop venting about Samantha. Marlena knows they’ve been through so much and always find their way back to each other. She’s puzzled when she learns EJ threw her out of the mansion and that they haven’t heard from her. “Maybe she’s with Allie.” John says that last EJ heard, she went to see Gabi to ask if she could stay in the house. “Oof,” Marlena comments.
EJ’s surprised when someone comes through the door to the tunnels. EJ’s happy to see his son and Johnny beams. He hands his dad a red ball he found which is his from when he was little. EJ asks why he’s back. He’s visiting. EJ shares that he and Sami broke up. Johnny’s surprised she’s not there pounding down the door, begging for forgiveness. EJ doesn’t give a damn. “That’s harsh,” Johnny comments. EJ apologized. He’ll refrain from speaking ill of her. The men have a drink. “I’m a single malt man, these days,” Johnny admits, making EJ chuckle. Johnny’s looking for investors for his new movie and wants to give EJ first crack. He loves the classics like Felini. He’s been checking out these art houses and was inspired. He made a few shorts on his phone. EJ frowns. “Your phone.” Johnny feels he’s meant to do this. He aks his dad to invest and EJ asks him to instead come work for him at DiMera Enterprises. It’s his legacy. Nonno would be proud. Johnny isn’t interested in suiting up and punching a clock. He understands his dad’s passion for the company but he doesn’t share that. EJ thinks he’s fooling around but Johnny finds that disrespectful. “No way in hell is any son of mine going to waste his time on something so frivolous.” Johnny thinks this is all about his ego to make him feel more powerful. “I’ll just ask mom,” Johnny says, downing the rest of his drink and taking off.

Allie embraces Tripp at the hospital. He’s glad she’s released. He was going nuts worried. They kiss and Chanel walks in from the elevator. The women hug. Chanel just wanted to check on her and suggests the three of them celebrate with dinner while she signed the documents for the bakery. Allie turns her down and wants to bring Tripp to see her grandparents. She signs the documents there. “Here you go, boss.” Chanel looks crestfallen as she watches them leave.
Allie and Tripp arrive with Henry at John and Marlena’s townhouse. Allie greets her grandparents and asks if they’ve seen her mom. They all admit they know about “the situation,” but they haven’t heard from Sami. Allie says Lucas hasn’t either and since EJ hasn’t spoken with her, and Gabi never saw her. Marlena and John look worried. John wonders if EJ was telling the truth. He’s never been one to cross him and get away with it. Allie asks if he thinks EJ could have hurt her mom. Marlena thinks it’s too soon to worry about Sami. She takes Henry to bed and Allie continues to worry. She begins to feel bad about getting dinner with Chanel. Allie doesn’t want her to think she’s blowing her off. Tripp’s sure she’s disappointed and not over her feelings. Allie looks sad. She’s afraid to give her the wrong idea. Tripp says maybe Chanel will meet someone.

At Julie’s Place, Chanel drinks alone as she flashes to kissing Allie. She tells herself to get over it. Johnny arrives and yells for the bartender. “Who do I have to sleep with to get a drink around here?” He looks at Chanel. “Don’t look at me,” she says with a smile. They commiserate over having a bad day. “Fight. My old man. Money.” Chanel’s been there. Johnny notes they’ve something in common. She admits she had a relationship end before it started. “Does that mean you’re single,” Johnny says with a laugh. She laughs and he tells her that life’s too short. When that doesn’t work, she agrees to let him buy her a drink. They chat about problems with money and exchange numbers as they seem to enjoy each other’s company.
John arrives at the DiMera mansion. He asks if EJ knows where Samantha is. EJ’s in no mood to discuss her. John says Belle told him what happened. Doc and him are concerned that they haven’t heard from her. EJ says he hasn’t heard from her since she went to Gabi’s. John admits Gabi hasn’t seen her. EJ assumes she decided it’d be unbearable to stay here. John asks why she wouldn’t come to see her, or her daughter. It’s not like Samantha to give up without a fight. He asks EJ if he’s sure he doesn’t know where she is. “What are you suggesting?” EJ asks, defensively. John’s not insinuating anything. EJ thinks he’s accusing him of keeping information from him or doing something terrible to her. He tells John to take his concerns and insinuations and get the hell out. John grins and goes while EJ smashes his glass in the fireplace.
John returns home. EJ’s sticking to his story, he tells everyone. Suddenly, Sami texts Marlena and Allie. “I’m sure everyone knows what happened between EJ and me. I appreciate your concern but I’m not up to answering calls and texts. The best thing for me now is to be alone to figure things out. If you don’t hear from me for a while, please understand I love you. Sami.” At least they know she’s safe.
