How Jack & Gwen’s Storyline Could Have Gone…Should Have Gone

Who’s Your Momma?
Wayne-Daniel Berard

Welcome to the first fan fiction story for Days of our Lives. We know our readers have taken issue with the Gwen vs. The Deveraux clan storyline since the beginning. Soaps Spoilers’ Wayne-Daniel came up with a solution to how this story could have gone. With an upcoming twist and memorable outcome, we know you’re going to want to read all three parts.

Part 1

“NO WAY IN HELL!!” Abigail leans forward as she shoots out those words, eyes bulging in anger. Her parents’ living room is suddenly as cold as it is quiet.

Scene and time shift: Two weeks before. A waiting room in a Chicago hospital. Jack and Gwen are sitting nervously on opposite chairs.

“How much bloody longer is this going to take?” Gwen says, fuming. Her fingers move toward her mouth but then pull away.

“It’s a major city hospital, after all,” Jack answers. “If there are emergencies that need lab work, I’m sure they’d take precedence.”

“Oh, and I’m sure you would have preferred Salem’s little hospital, where you and your friends could have controlled the outcome?!” Gwen spits back.

“Be fair, will you?” Jack answers. “This paternity test was my idea, remember? And I was fine with you choosing the hospital AND the doctor — and not telling me either until we got in the car this morning. How do I know YOU don’t have someone here in your back pocket — or your back something else for that matter!”

“How DARE you . . . “ Gwen stands up and begins toward Jack, but at that moment a doctor approaches.

“Ms. Rizczech? Mr. Devereaux? I have your test results,” the doctor says. He holds out a folder.

Both Gwen and Jack reach for it at the same time and glare at each other!

“Perhaps you’d better read the results to us,” Jack hurries to ask.

“Very well,” the doctor looks askance at both of them but opens the folder.

“The test shows — no relationship between the two of you.”

Jack shrugs in relief. Gwen snaps the folder from the doctor’s hand.

“Are you sure?” she demands.

“Quite sure,” the doctor replies testily. “Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have truly sick people to attend to.”

Scene change. In a moving car. Jack is behind the wheel. Gwen sits on the passenger side. Her arms are crossed; she stares straight ahead, angrily.

“Right, then. You must be relieved,” she says.

“Not really,” Jack answers her.

“Not really?!” Gwen turns to him. “You’re not relieved NOT to be the father of the ranting witch who tried to destroy your daughter AND your marriage?”

“Leaves as many questions as it does answers,” Jack replies. “Like who set me up in the first place? Why would your mother tell you those lies about paternity and payments — all of it!?”

“I have no bloody idea,” Gwen replies. “But at least you’re rid of me now.” She returns to staring straight ahead.

“What if I don’t want to be rid of you?” Jack says.

Gwen visibly starts, and turns back toward Jack, eyes wide.

“What are you suggesting?!” she stammers. “What kind of pig . . .!”

“Oh, put a mirror on the floor and get over yourself!” Jack shakes his head. “I love my wife — besides, you’re not even all that good looking!”

Gwen humphs, recrosses her arms, and shifts lower in her seat.

“No, what I mean is, wouldn’t you like to get to the bottom of this? Find out what this is REALLY about? I sure as hell would! Maybe we can work together here?”

“Together? Really?” Gwen answers. “Alright, mister investigative reporter. Where do we start?”

“Well, we’re in Chicago,” Jack answers. “What was the name of that cocktail lounge your mother waitressed in?”

Scene change. The car is pulling up to the curb.

“Don’t expect much,” Gwen says as she opens her door. “‘Shore Thing’ was quite a dive, as I recall.”

“Well, it seems to have come up in the world,” Jack comments, as they stand before a shiny neon and glass night club right on Lake Michigan. “Lakefront property’s shot up in value over the years.”

Gwen and Jack enter the club. The music and lights are VERY hip! A waitress approaches them.

“There’s a fifty-dollar cover,” she says.

“Actually, my Mum used to work here, years ago,” Gwen explains, “Tiffany Rizczech? We’re looking for anyone who might remember her?”

“Gwennie?!” a woman’s voice screeches from inside. “Gwennie? Is that you?”

An older woman comes skittering over in a very tight dress and heels. She’s well past her prime, but her clothes and hair say that she is having trouble admitting it!

“Cheri?” Gwen exclaims. “My God, you’re still here!”

“Of course I am, darlin’!” Cheri shakes her shoulders and very bleached blonde curls in delight. “I married the owner — Sal, remember him? God rest his soul.” She crosses herself. “Left the place to me, so I upgraded. But what are you doin’ here? And who’s HE?!” She gives Jack the once-over — twice!

“Oh, he’s nobody,” Gwen answers. “I’m looking for information about my mom.”

“Well, you came to the right place!” Cheri just bubbles. “She was my best friend, y’know,” she nods to Jack. “Ginny, watch my station! Come back to the office with me, you two.”

Scene change, Cheri’s office. It looks at least twenty years out of place like it belongs to a dockside dive rather than a happening hot spot!

“Sit down! Sit down!” Cheri giggles. She sits on one side of a seedy old desk; Jack and Gwen sit on the other. Cheri pulls at a bottom drawer and takes out a photo album. She opens it and positively squeals in delight!

“Here we all are!” she says. “There’s your mom. And there’s me! You couldn’t have been more than five or six.”

“You don’t look very happy,” Jack says.

“I look bloody miserable! Because I was!” Gwen replies. She turns the page.

“And who’s that with us here?” she asks.

“Oh, that’s some friend of your mom’s,” Cheri grimaces. “Never cared for her. She’d come around maybe once a month — like a bad bout of cramps. Don’t know what her story was, but Tiff was always a little more flush after she left.”

“Wait! “Jack leans further forward. “That woman! Oh, my God!” he exclaims.

“What is it, honey?” Cheri asks. “You look like you’ve seen a ghost?”

“Worse!” Jack’s eyes glaze over. “That’s the devil herself!”
