Days’ Flashback: Vivian Crashes Kate’s Plane 25 Years Ago

Happy pre-twenty-fifth anniversary to Lauren Koslow as Kate Roberts!

On the January 21 episode of Days of our Lives, fans were gaga over the twenty-five-year-old flashback that was showcased of Kate Roberts (Lauren Koslow) cleaning fish guts on a boat, cursing Vivian Alamain (Louise Sorel). Generally speaking, flashbacks usually consist of scenes from the past few days or weeks, not decades gone by, so this was a treat that didn’t go unnoticed.

Kate and Tony DiMera (Thaao Penghlis) were chatting about Jake Lambert taking over as CEO. Tony wasn’t happy about a “grease monkey” taking on such an important position. He also thought it was funny and ironic that Kate was dating Jake, and chuckled saying, “You’re dating Vivian Alamain’s son. She must be rolling in her grave.” Kate hoped so, after all Vivian had put her through in the past. She recalled to Tony that on April 24, 1995, Vivian sabotaged the plane Kate was taking overseas on business, so she could get Victor Kiriakis (John Aniston) to fall for her. Vivian poisoned the pilot and the plane crashed over the ocean. Everyone assumed Kate died, but she spent an entire year on a fishing boat, cleaning fish guts and plotting her arch-nemesis’ demise.

Incidentally, this was the first storyline that Koslow acted in as Kate Roberts. She gave an interview with Soap Central, telling them “It was a pretty dramatic storyline that I was stepping into. Kate was on a fishing boat, she had been kidnapped, her plane had crashed, and there was a whole bunch of adventure that she had been through, and then when I was picking it up [where former portrayer Deborah Adair had left off in 1995], she was being kept prisoner on this fishing boat and had to chop up fish, and she tried to escape, all these things. It was great fun. Really, really great fun.” She recalled how different her role was as Margot Lynley on Bold and the Beautiful and stated, “and after she escaped from the fishing boat, she was marooned on a deserted island. She just washed ashore and didn’t know if there were beasts living there. I mean, it was crazy! It was just so different from what I had done before.”

Fun fact: Kate Roberts was written by Sheri Anderson. The writer tweeted “Kate was one of the last characters I created before the incredible Jim Reilly was brought to Days. She was created for Debra Adair, but I love the flavor and textures @laurenkoslow brings to the role. And she’s still bringing it – 22 years later! #days #kateroberts #laurenkoslow”

Happy pre-anniversary to Lauren Koslow, who can officially celebrate this coming April.
