B&B Opinion: Viewers Tired of Desperate Women Fighting for Unworthy Men, Mansplaining & Meddling Moms

Too Many Meddling Mothers and Desperate Women Fighting For Unworthy Men On One Show

I am not team Brooke or team Taylor or Tridge or Bridge or Fridge or anyone else. I only ship good story, and we’re not always getting good story…

Finn Has Two Mommies—And They’re Both Nuts

I hate the way Finn’s story is being told. Not only because of all the holes, but because there’s a better story in here. I digress. In a twist that surprised no one, Finn is very much alive and in doctor mama Li’s care. Don’t think too hard about it because the story falls apart when you examine the details.

1. How did Li get her near dead son home without an ambulance or assistance? Was he just laying on the couch until this room got kitted out?

2. If Finn is in such bad shape, he could need emergency medical assistance at any time. But Li is dashing off here and there and leaving him alone?

3. As with Steffy’s confounding medical issue before, I’m totally confused as to what Finn’s actual medical problem is. He was shot, there was something about no brain activity and he was declared dead.

But now he’s in the guest room and only seems to be on oxygen. No ventilator? If you want us to care, we need to understand what’s happening. Why is Li keeping Finn from Steffy and the rest of the Forresters? She did this before she knew Sheila shot him. We know she’s not keeping him from Steffy so what gives?

What should happen next? Finn and Steffy will undoubtedly get their romantic reunion, but there needs to be more. In real life, coma victims can have temporary and sometimes permanent changes to their personality. What if resurrected Finn isn’t the nice guy we remember, at least for a while?

Brooke Gotta Be Brooke

Let me preface this first by saying, Taylor 2.0 has revitalized a very tired triangle and brought a new energy to every one of her relationships, especially with Brooke. Their rivalry has been reignited and the actresses have got chemistry to spare. More of them, please!

I have never loved Brooke more in the past year than I do in this week’s episodes. She’s trying to get Hope to see sense, or at least B&B’s version of sense, and she’s right.

“It’s not selfish, honey. It’s guarding your family and the needs of your children.” Brooke being Brooke and I love it. Of course Brooke is concerned about how much time Liam spends away from home. She knows how easily dumb men can be seduced. He’s waffled back and forth between Hope and Steffy so many times that we were all wondering if we were headed for that dreaded love triangle again.

But this time, Hope’s not worried because Steffy’s grieving. Still. After all we’ve been through with those three, when the Slut From the Valley drops some wisdom about dumb men on your head, you should be taking notes.

If the show were more telenovela (and it should be), Brooke would have secretly microchipped every man on the show. Where’s Ridge? What’s Liam doing? Whose bed is Bill in? Brooke’s got an app for that!

What should happen next?

Ridge chooses Taylor again. Thomas finds his conscience and secretly meets a brokenhearted Brooke to tell her how sorry he is. Thomas’s obsession with Brooke is more than just about reuniting his parents — he’s still thinking about psychedelic berry sexy time with his stepmother.

Brooke finds her new destiny in Thomas, which will have everyone in an uproar and really stick it to Taylor and Ridge. Slapping and name-calling ensues.

What will likely happen? Ridge will choose Brooke because he always does, and no growth will happen.

Who should Ridge choose?

Paris Loves Carter Loves Quinn Loves Eric Loves Donna

“I hope that smile means you’re thinking about Zende.” One of the creepiest lines a mother has ever said to her child on a soap opera. Grace seriously needs to take it down a notch.

I get why Grace doesn’t want daughter Paris to get involved with Carter—he cheated on Zoe and that’s enough reason for a mother. But why is Grace so adamant that Paris marry milquetoast Zende? Because he’s got money and status? Why is this written as either or? Why can’t she tell Paris to choose Zende or “none of the above?” I can’t believe they brought in Cassandra Creech and have her using the same line for months when she’s so much better than this.

The whole Carter/Paris/Grace aspect of this story is gross and weird but also boring. Just drop it and focus on Quinn and Carter. They’re the fan favorite here. Viewers don’t like Paris. Pushing her on us only makes it worse and for some has made it hard to even ship Quarter.

I know that Quinn, like a lot of other women on the show, has a checkered and sometimes psychotic past, but I hate seeing what Eric is doing to her regardless of her own past infidelity. It’s humiliating. And he’s a dirty old man with gross man fantasies that no woman watching wants to see.

Looking forward to what Quinn will do to Eric when the truth about his affair with Donna comes out, which likely will happen as soon as that ring is used while he’s in bed with Donna. There’s going to be a pickled ball or two, that’s for sure.

Quinn vs Paris for Carter.
Brooke vs Taylor for Ridge.
Quinn vs Donna for Eric.

There are too many desperate women fighting over unworthy men. If you think about it, none of these men is worthy of any of these queens. At least one of these women should just bounce and leave her rival and waffling man to themselves. It’d shake things up and validate how many of the viewers feel.

One overbearing mother meddling in her child’s life is not only great soap but pretty much the foundation of B&B. RIP, Stephanie Douglas Forrester! Now there’s a whole gaggle of Stephanie wannabes on this show at the same time. It’s too much of a good thing and starts irritating us.

However, I’m all for B&B finding a way to keep Li on the canvas. Maybe she could be the next Mrs. Eric Forrester? Eric’s always had a soft spot for nutty mothers—Stephanie, Brooke, Sheila, Quinn. Tell me I’m wrong.

Should Li stay on the show?

What should happen next? Cribbing this from a tweet by B&B superfan @MattHanvey—Li realizes she needs help taking care of Finn and convinces/blackmails fellow doctor Grace into helping her. Maybe in exchange for Li doing something dastardly to make sure the Carter/Paris wedding happens? It’d be very shocking and soapy.

Will the Paris/Carter wedding really happen?

If Liam’s Here, It’s Mansplaining Time

My loathing of Liam is well documented. He thinks he’s an expert on everything but really has nothing important to say and takes forever to say it. In my mind, I imagine that Liam is a big fan of Y&R’s Billy Abbott’s manpain podcast. Which would be the worst crossover ever. Can you imagine Billy talking about his pain and Liam chiming in trying to mansplain even Billy as he talks about his love triangle?

Maybe Liam should consider what his actual wife is going through as he spends every waking moment with his ex-wife. He swears he’s “not taking this for granted,” despite weeks of us seeing him do exactly that.

All of the chatter about Hayes growing up without a father is silly and ignores show history. Liam, you know who else grew up without their father? YOU DID. Who else did? Uh, Steffy and Thomas. You all turned out fine-ish. Well, not Thomas.

Children growing up with one parent is not uncommon and it’s not going to ruin a child’s life. The show needs to stop trying to make it a thing.

What should happen next? Liam stays home with his wife and child and Thomas’s child in their little backyard playhouse.

What should Liam do?

Get the Balance Right

B&B often struggles with the fundamentals of good soap opera. As I mentioned last week, details are not the show’s forte, and neither is balancing multiple stories. Here’s a few notes on what needs improving right now.

I would much rather see Steffy struggling with real life as a widow and single mother than just scene after scene with the same dialogue. Seeing Steffy pick herself up and move on with her life alone would make Finn’s return even more emotional and fulfilling when it happens.

If each episode has three sets of scenes, two should be story development and action. Only one should be recapping. There have been weeks of Steffy holding down the couch and recapping what’s happened with Liam. Taylor recapping with Ridge. Brooke recapping with Hope. Blah blah blah. It’s boring. It doesn’t further the story along.

This is a perfect opportunity for them to utilize other characters we haven’t seen in ages like Katie, Dollar Bill, Wyatt and Flo, Shauna. It would stop the stagnation over the same stilted dialogue for episodes at a time.
